The White Man

White Fang traveled for two days, alone. He enjoyed running and hunting, but winter was coming and it was difficult to find food. So, he went back to the Indians' camp. The only thing left I here now was burned wood from their fires. White Fang lay down where he used to when he was living with Gray Beaver and his family. The memory of them came back to him. It was a mistake to leave them. He got up and decided to find them.
Gray Beaver, Mit-sah and Kloo-kooch did not follow the rest of the Indians right away. They stayed close to the river near their old village and hunted, hoping to find White Fang again. One day, Gray Beaver and Mit-sah saw a moose. They followed it quietly clown the river, ready to shoot their arrows. Then, from the trees came a gray wolf. It attacked and killed the moose for them. It happened so fast, it took them a few seconds to realize who it was.

"White Fang!"
The wolf walked slowly towards them with his head down, thinking that Gray Beaver was going to hit him for leaving. Again, he was surprised when Gray Beaver touched his head gently.

"There is no other wolf like you, White Fang. I know you want to live in the wild, but you can stay with us for as long as you want."
White fang was happy again with the Indians. Mit-sah taught him how to pull a sled.
"White' Fang, I'll put you in the front because I know you're stronger and faster than the dogs."
The dogs still did not like White Fang, but this did not bother him anymore. He lived for Mit-sah and Gray Beaver. The dogs and other humans were unimportant to him, and if they tried to hurt him or his family, he would fight them to the death.
The years passed and during the winter, the Indians made hats, gloves and shoes from animal skins and fur. In the spring, they sold them to the white men at Fort Yukon. The first time White Fang saw a white man he thought they were more powerful than the Indians because they had guns and the Indians seemed afraid of them.
White Fang traveled alone with Gray Beaver to Fort Yukon. In those days, men came to look for gold, and they got to Fort Yukon by boat. The large boats on the river looked amazing to White Fang. When the boats landed, the white men got off, along with their guns and dogs. Their dogs immediately attacked White Fang but he beat them easily. At first, the white men thought White Fang was a dog.

"What kind of dog is that?"
"How much do you want for that dog?"

Gray Beaver did not answer their questions. He simply said the 'dog' was not for sale. For one thing, he had a lot of money from the things he sold. One man thought he could take White Fang away from the Indian. His name was Smith, but everyone called him 'Beauty'. This was a joke, because this man was really ugly. He was a small man with a horrible face, and he hated everyone.
"I know what Indians like," he said to himself, "and I'm going to get that dog, one way or another
