The Call of the Wild

Slowly White Fang learned to live without his mother. Gray Beaver's wife, Kloo-kooch, and his son,   Mit-sah, took care of White Fang, and soon he felt that they were his family.
As White Fang was growing up, he sometimes thought about freedom. He felt lonely. None of the dogs liked him because he was stronger and faster than they were. So, when they attacked him, he hurt them badly. However, White Fang liked living with the humans. He enjoyed lying by the fire and eating the food Gray Beaver and his family gave him.
One day, White Fang learned something more about himself and his new family. He and Mit-sah were in the forest. A group of other Indian boys came up to Mit-sah and began talking to him. "You're on our land now. Go back to where you came from!" "The forest is free. I can go wherever I want!" One of the boys pushed Mit-sah and he pushed back. They began to fight. White Fang did not understand, but his whole body shook with anger. One of the boys was going to hit Mit-sah with a club. When White Fang saw this, he bit that boy and attacked the others. They all ran away in fear, shouting, "Wolf! Wolf!"
Mit-sah ran back to camp and told everyone the story. White Fang thought that Gray Beaver was going to hit him for biting a human. He was very surprised when Gray Beaver gave him a plate full of meat.
You're a true fighter! I realized that the first time I tried to touch you. You look after us and we look after you."
White Fang did not understand the words. He only knew what he felt. He did not like it when anybody tried to hurt his family. He loved this family and wanted to protect them.
Summer ended, and the Indian tribe had to move on. In the fall, they hunted animals so they could have food to eat in the winter. White Fang watched the Indians take down their tepees and put everything into their canoes. Gray Beaver and his family were very busy. They forgot about White Fang and White Fang thought this was the time for him to return to the wild. He waited until they were all down by the river and then he ran and ran. He felt alive! He heard Gray Beaver and Mit-sah calling his name.
"White Fang!"
"White Fang!"
White Fang hid until he could not hear them anymore. He wanted to live free like all wolves, but the sound of those voices made him sad. That family was good to him. He could not forget them.
